Notes

Chris and I floated in his canoe on the South Channel of the Boise River from Glenwood Bridge to Eagle Road. It was a beautiful day to start, then turned cloudy, windy, and cold in the evening. For the most part, Chris rowed and I nymphed as we floated. We stopped at a handful of places, including one where I had 3 nice fish on in 10 casts and lost all 3. I saw one start to twist in the water after the hook set and I think it was a large trout. The second one took 20 yards of fly line before I could really react, and shook free. Then the third was a trout I think as well, but I didn't get a good hookset. I moved upstream and Chris worked his way up to where I was fishing and he landed 2 rainbows out of the spot, including a very fat 16" beauty. There was just something different about the riffles in one spot, perhaps where there was a depression that held fish.

I caught my 15" rainbow as we drifted through some slack water above the first diversion dam. Very nicely colored fish.

In the evening as we floated the south channel, we came across a large nesting site for Great Blue Herons. There were probably 100 herons perched in a couple huge trees. Pretty incredible site. Also got to fish under the watchful eye of a bald eagle.

Great day out.
