Notes

The first difference I saw with Billingsley since fishing it at the end of May was how overgrown everything is. I had to bushwhack to get to the outlet of the hatchery and scared several nice fish in a small sub-outlet. In the main outlet I caught a couple fingerlings and scared some bigger fish away. I fished my way downstream with a san juan worm and a #18 hare's ear but was unfocused in my casting in an effort to get to the first hole.

At the pipe hole, I walked up on it and scared many fish that were holding just upstream of the hole. I walked down about 30' and started nymphing back up into the hole and had no interest. There were large fish rising occasionally and I finally saw some #20 PMDs on the surface. After nymphing without success I walked back up to the pipe and was going to sit on it when I slipped off it, slammed my elbow into it and my hand went numb, and fell into the water. Very nice. So that pretty much scared most of the fish in the hole.

I walked downstream just around the bend and saw several fish rising consistently, so I switched over to a #18 CDC PMD comparadun and a #20 black clear wing spinner dropper. In the process of casting I got my slack line caught in one of the biggest messes ever with these annoying overgrown weeds. After spending 10 minutes to fix that mess, I finally made a good cast and had one on that nearly instantly broke off the #20 spinner. That also put those fish down. So I walked downstream just around the next bend and there were another group of fish rising. I retied on a new spinner and after several poor casts I hooked a very fiesty 12" brown. After landing him there weren't any more fish rising.

I walked downstream past several holes and saw no fish rising. I arrived at the bridge and there wasn't much consistently rising above or below it, so I switched to a BH PT and tried nympyhing downstream without success. I did catch a 13" brown on the retrieve, and it was getting dark, so I switched over to a black ghost with 2 large sinkers above it. I had a fish on on the first cast and lost it, then on the second cast I caught and landed the 12" rainbow. One or two more casts and I was into the 18.5" brown. Very fat fish. After landing and measuring the brown it was quite dark and I made a few more casts but without any success.
