Notes

MCB & TMM:

I almost fished the loop section above Spruce this morning. I got there about 7:00 and parked at the yellow house. There wasn't anyone else around, so I thought I was good to go. I walked down below the RR bridge and started fishing at about the same spot that I always start fishing the loop. I was there about 5 minutes when I heard something behind me. I looked downstream and a sort of fly-guy was coming up fast. He had a 20 foot fly rod, ok, maybe it wasn't 20 feet long, but it was a long one, but he wasn't fly-fishing. He was dunking minnows and was fishing so rapidly that I thought he was in some sort of contest. I thought maybe we could share the stream at least for that section, but it wasn't to be. He would dunk his minnow for about two seconds and if no trout hit it, he pulled it up again. It took me a lot longer to cast my spinner and retrieve it, so I really couldn't get ahead of him. I fished behind him for about 10 minutes and he was wading back and forth across the stream and dunking his minnow in all the good spots. The worst part was that he caught about four trout while I was watching him and I didn't catch anything. If fact I wasn't getting any hits or any follows, I assumed because he was spooking the fish. I walked the bank and got ahead of him two times, but he just moved ahead of me and kept fishing a lot faster than I could, so I gave up.

I walked up the trail until I was almost in sight of the upper RR bridge on the loop section and I started to fish from there. That's usually the part of this section where I am about ready to quit fishing, but today I spent two hours fishing below and above the second RR bridge. I caught 17 brown trout, 13 of which were between 10 and 12 inches long. Two of the trout were mini-trout, and two were nice 14 inch trout. I'm fairly sure I would have had a good morning if I didn't have to deal with the minnow dunker before I could get down to fishing.

It was cloudy and foggy for most of the morning, but it only rained a little bit and that was around the time I was finished fishing for the morning, so all in all it wasn't a bad morning.

PS: The minnow dunker never did cast. He just dipped his minnow in the water and pulled it up again.
