Notes

Got a call at 7am for fathers day from my father telling me he was fishing Harvey's lake from shore and not having much luck. I told him to change baits and I was heading back to bed. (Me sleeping past 6am is rare so.. I was trying to make the most of it. He asked why I was not out fishing, I reminded him that I left almost all my gear at our cabin and at his house prior to my trip to India.

As I tried to go back to bed, I could see it was overcast and would likely be a good morning to fish. Not having any gear....what to do? Well, not having any gear was a stretch. I got out of bed, tracked down an old rod, half working reel, and two hooks / rubber baits. Scraping the bottom on this one.

Dressed and told the wife I would be back in an hour.

So, this state park gets constant pressure every day of the week and double on the weekend. It is very small and only fishable by land. I picked one shoreline and could see a guy about 20 yards up from me working the same direction. I figured, who cares will just make it more challenging and I'm lucky to be out here.

In all, with a small ugly otter (at least I think it was) and a light slider jig head, I manged to land two, have three onto shore (not landed), and two missed strikes.....it was a fun hour. All of this action while really fishing behind another person. There is a lot of brush between spots where you can stand and cast. I believe my luck was lure choice (or lack there of) and the fact that with my old gear, I was putting myself and the bait in spots where the other person was either overlooking or would not go too. In fact, the three I did not land were likely because I could not get a good hook set. Easy to break a rod when tree branches are around you.

I have learned something valuable on this trip. If I know I am going to fish tight quarters, I will back an older pole. There is no need to worry every other cast about a $100+ investment when my older 40 - 50 dollar rods will work out and I will not be sick to my stomach if I break one.

So, the fish were all pretty small however, pictures for your enjoyment or laughter. All from my camera phone.

Oh, my dad changed baits...never did get a hit.
