Notes
Joe and I arrived a bit late and Kafka and Heiden were just getting on the water. They had stopped at a campsite that had a nice long run go through it that was about 3'-4' deep in the center, then a couple feet deep up to the sides. At first it didn't look like there would be many fish in that run, so I walked downstream two holes to another nice, long run where there were occasional fish rising. After awhile I finally got it going nymphing and caught several whitefish but no trout. After trying a few different dry flies with no success I tied on a chernobyl ant with a BWO PME and caught a huge rise from a 13" rainbow. I didn't catch anything else on the surface and switched back to nymphs and started catching whitefish again.
I moved back up to the original hole and Kafka and Heiden were fishing the next hole up. Fish were occasionally rising and I switched to a #18 elk hair caddis with a #16 yellow humpy and had one on on the caddis from the middle of the riffle. I then got out and focused on fishing the first 10'-15' of water from the bank. I had a splash and a look on the caddis but no love for the humpy. I switched the humpy to a zebra midge nymph and had a fish on within a couple casts that quickly got off. A couple casts later I hooked a 17" rainbow that fought like I had foul-hooked it in the tail. Amazing fighter. After that I started fishing back upstream along the side and quickly had another fish on the nymph but he got off. I moved up a bit and then rose a huge 19" rainbow to the elk hair caddis. After that I fished for quite awhile with the dry/nymph combo and had no luck. On the other side of the run I hooked a fish on the dropper that got off, but that was it. It was good fishing there for half an hour but died off quickly.
Later on I went with a deep-nymph rig and fished the main part of the run about 50 yards downstream from the head of the run, and landed 2 large whitefish (one 18") and also a big sucker.
Deep nymphing worked fantastic for whitefish but not well at all for trout.
Heiden sight-fished for fish all day and landed 4 rainbows with a big of 22", all on a small BWO nymph. Eric caught a couple decent rainbows. Joe caught 1 brown and rose a few fish.
