Notes
Weird evening. I started at the Rock Garden and saw quite a few fish rising consistently at the tail out. Initially I fished just with the thorax, but after not getting a whole lot I added on the halfback dropper and had fish on my first two casts with it. There were lots of PMDs on the water and the fish were focused on them for awhile.
After the action tapered off I moved up to the rock garden where there were lots of fish in the side slack water sipping stuff. I tried and tried with my various PMD dun, cripple, and spent patterns and only caught 2 on the thorax dun. Towards dusk a big caddis hatch was on and I caught one while skating the caddis across the top. I need a better skating fly.
I dunno, it was a weird night. I feel like I regressed a bit with all the fish that were rising and ignoring my presentations.

Why didn't you try the zebra midge as a dropper?

The fish were rising to some stage of PMDs or caddis and I was focused on figuring that out. As focused as they were on whatever they were feeding I think they would have ignored the disco zebra midgeling, especially in the slower side eddies I was fishing.
I did see one nice fish chase a caddis that was running on the water. And I never did see any of the adult PMDs I saw floating along get eaten (at the Crapper Hole, that is). Most of the fish seemed to be taking something just in the film or just below it. I dunno.
