Notes

Today was a bit better fishing-wise. I rose a handful of fish to a #10 Chernobyl Ant, but couldn't land any of the fish. We stopped on this one gravel bar that dropped off into a slower stretch along the side of the river where a few fish were rising. I landed two cutthroat from that spot and missed 3 or so other fish, all on a CDC Comparadun. I think Eric got a few looks at his Chernobyl pattern, and I'm not sure how Joe did.

The rest of the day was pretty slow fishing.

In the evening, we stopped at a long rock island and I nymphed where the water ran off a shelf into deeper water. I hooked something on a #16 hare's ear that ran slowly downstream and stopped. I followed a little bit but soon couldn't follow anymore because of current and depth. I got the fish to move a little, then it continued going downstream and I couldn't stop it at all. I got well into my backing before I tried to put the brakes on it and it shook a couple times and was off. The only way I could have landed that fish is if Eric had gotten the boat down to me in time to pick me up. Next time we'll have better planning.

I could have simply foul-hooked a large fish. Even so, the fish had to be huge for me not to be able to do anything to it as far as moving it. And it seemed more annoyed that it was hooked than scared and going on a furious run.
