Notes

Karl and I fished Niagara after our Rock Creek morning. The weather turned out to be real nice, but there wasn't much of a hatch and not much surface activity for most of the day. We fished from the hatchery output downstream to the mouth. I moved around quite a bit, trying to hit lots of pocket water. Most of the fish I caught were 5"-7". I did catch one 12" and a couple 10" out of much shallower, faster water, perhaps 1' deep. It seemed like bigger fish would hang out in the shallow riffles, then smaller fish would hang out in the pools. Because the spring water is so clear, I think the bigger fish find more protection from predators where the surface is broken. The small fish are left with the slow, clear pools. That's just something I noticed with the fish I caught and where I caught them.

There were immense numbers of what I think are spawning carp up near the head of the stream. Ridiculous numbers of them. Karl caught a couple of them on streamers and I had a couple hits and finally landed one on a sculpin pattern. They had vibrant orange lines running down their sides, making me think that's their spawning colors.
