Notes

Great day in terms of numbers. Fish size was disappointing. I don't think the fly would have made much difference. Fish were everywhere and didn't seem real picky. The people I saw fishing from shore casting spinners didn't seem to be catching any which seemed odd. I caught most of the fish in 10-12' of water, although I think the fish were actually sitting just a couple of feet beneath the surface. I had several takes as soon as the fly hit the water and many fish hit on the strip in after the fly was already up near the surface. Perhaps that's why bank fisherman weren't doing so well. Perhaps they were actually too deep.

Dude, that is ridiculous. Your catch rate was almost 17 fish an hour! Damn.

Yeah, I know. I thought about staying to make it a 100 fish day, but to be honest, I got kinda bored because they were small and no match for my 5-weight. Had a few of them been in the 14 to 16" range, I probably could have been tempted to stay longer. I'm hoping over the next year or two there will be a good mix of older and younger age classes. It had larger fish in it prior to them having to poison it and re-stock it.

I still can't really explain the numbers I experience there. There's clearly a lot of fish, but even when they have just stocked places like Spring Valley, Moose Creek, etc. I don't catch them like that. I've never caught fewer than 30 fish at Deer Creek Reservoir and have had multiple 70 to 80 fish days. It literally was a fish every couple of minutes.
