Notes

MCB, TMM, & BD:

This morning I decided to fish the LJ in the lower sections where it is big water. I normally park at the bridge below Petersburg and fish my way upstream from there, but this morning I drove back the little road on the right side of the bridge. I drove back past the trailers on the big curve and parked slightly downstream from the RR bridge. Then I walked back the road to the area where the bank is really steep, fumbled my way down to the stream and fished back to above the RR bridge. You may notice I rated it as a great day on the LJ even though I only caught 16 trout. It was the size of the trout that made it a great morning. The LJ is wide and fairly flat in this entire section, but it has nice holes and a couple of nice runs in between the flat water. I caught big trout, one right after another and the smallest trout I caught were 10-12 inches. The biggest was a beautiful 17 inch brown, big fat trout. I caught two 16 inchers, two 15 inchers, four 14 inchers, two 13 inchers, and five that were between 10-12 inches in length. I don't think I have ever had a morning on the LJ where I caught that many big trout. The trout were all brown trout, of course, and I didn't catch any bass or fall fish.

The water temperature of the LJ was 66 degrees which is a couple of degrees cooler than it was on Tuesday morning, even though I was fishing a section that is one of the warmest on the LJ. I noticed that Spring was only 58 degrees this morning, so there is a fairly large temperature difference between the two streams. It could be a long time before I have another morning like this one. I guess that makes up for the days when the biggest fish I catch is 11 or 12 inches. I don't think the section with the really steep bank gets as much fishing pressure as a lot of the other sections on the LJ. The access is pretty difficult and that keeps a lot of folks off the sections where I caught the biggest fish.
