Notes

MCB, TMM, BD:

It was an M & M day on Spring Creek this morning. The water was murkey and there was a light mist over the stream. These are the kind of conditions that I like for spin fishing. I had a fairly good morning, but should have had a really good morning. I missed more fish than I caught. I still managed to catch 24 browns in about three hours. Most of them were in the 7-10 inch range and the two biggest ones were both 13 inches. I'm not sure why I missed so many fish this morning, maybe because now that I am 67 instead of 66 my reflexes aren't what they used to be. Today is my birthday and I spent the morning enjoying Spring Creek. That's as good as birthday presents get.

I got to the parking area about 6:45 this morning and I was the first vehicle there. I walked back to the old hatchery building to start and fished upstream for three hours. That's about 1.5 miles from the parking area, so it gets a little less pressure than some of the other sections of Spring. When I got back to my truck about 11:00 the parking area was almost full and fly guys were everywhere. There were at least three vehiciles with out of state plates, one from Missouri. When I was eating lunch the Missouri guy came over and was talking to me. He was making a fishing trip to PA and it was his first time to fish PA streams. He was taking 10 days vacation and hitting all the famous PA streams, like Spring, Penns, Fishing. the LJ, Elk, Young woman's, Pine, etc. , etc. Of course he read about all these great streams in his fishing magazines and on the web. He told me that his fishing experience in PA was a lot different than his Missouri fishing. He said there was a lot more pressure on the streams in PA and he couldn't believe how many people were fishing on weekdays in PA. I told him we have a lot of old retired farts and we can fish any day we want to. I should have told him our streams were crowded partly because we get all these folks from out of state who read about our great trout streams and just have to come and fish them.

PS: One of the good things about fishing Spring this morning is that it wasn't a cast and clean day. I could actually throw my spinner out and retrieve it and throw it again without cleaning it every cast. That's a good thing that doesn't happen that often on Spring!
