Notes

USGS 13337000 LOCHSA RIVER NR LOWELL ID

After the fishing orgasm I had the day before on the N.F. Clearwater, I wasn’t very enthusiastic about picking up and leaving to drive to another place. I easily could have just packed up and went home very satisfied. I was really fished-out.
The Lochsa is a lot like Kelly, maybe a bit bigger. I was under the impression it was another large river but it turns out it’s considerably smaller. There are hundreds of turn-offs on Hwy 12 and semi-easy access to the river, There’s a lot of shallow, wide flat areas but I concentrated on runs + pools. Fished from the roadside and rocks, water was deep quick so wet-wading was pretty much moot. Day One I fished from ~ mile marker #155 up to Lochsa Lodge.
Westslope cuts are beautiful. Fish are aggressive and got A LOT of flashes that caused me to change flies. Took a while to realize the big fish like the hoppers while the 8-10” like the smaller (#12-14) stuff. There’s nothing like a 16” Westslope on the end of your line. Water was gin-clear and surprising deep – deceiving from the roadside.
