Notes

Baetis come out on the crappy weather days. And when I first got on the water there were bugs and pods of fishing rising. Caught my first and only fish on the 3rd cast---fish tore through the hole and spooked all the other risers. I walked upstream and found about 4 fish rising consistently but I made a bad approach and they stopped. Then the weather turned nice (sun poked through) and everything stopped. So I started nymphing a lightening bug and a baetis nymph and got zero hits. Fish started coming up again near dark but they were all holding in shallow, very calm water (stillwater) and feeding like lake fish (swim around and randomly pick off flies)....I couldn't get a fly in front of them. Got frustrated and decided I would just observe, so I got to a high vantage point and saw a really nice brownie and hog rainbow cruising 2 ft off the bank in 3 ft of water picking off BWOs.

That's too bad that you weren't able to catch the fish consistently on top. But, at least you were able to find feeding fish. The Madison trip sounded pretty rough.
