Notes

Karl and I had planned on fishing the area/islands between Cow Creek and Cayuse Creek but the river is pretty hard to fish from the bank through that area and Karl had Bryce, so wading was gonna be tough. We ended up driving down to the hole that we often fish. I walked downstream and fished upstream along the shore in 1-4' of water with an orange stimulator and an x-caddis dropper and got no rises. I saw no rises either. I switched the dropper to a deep sparkle pupa and got no hits. I then walked back to the main hole and fished the side currents of the whitewater with a brown Kauffman stone and a Stonulator dropper with no success. I switched the dropper to a golden-stone nymph? that I had and had two fish on in two casts, and both fish got off. The first was a small fish, but the second fish was good sized and snapped the fly off since I set the hook as I was starting my forward cast. I tied on a rubber-legged copper john dropper and worked my way upstream fishing pockets. I ended up getting quite a few hits and had 5 fish on in addition to landing 2. I was able to land the ones 10" or smaller but the larger ones, the hook pulled out. I had a solid hook set on a very nice fish, at least 16", but I could never pull him in with the current and he kept going downstream and I could only follow him so far. Eventually the hook pulled out with him as well. :(

All and all, not a bad evening - I had 5 good fish on - but frustrating because of the high current and not being able to really play any of the decent-sized fish in.

Hatch: saw caddis and pink alberts, nothing really hatching
