Notes: This was the only surface midge pattern that worked. I had another strike on this fly but missed it. This fly used orange foam, which may have helped trigger the takes since the midges hatching had rust/burnt orange colored wings. This fly had several

Notes

Not a bad outing. I probably could have caught more but I focused on dry flies only for about an hour. A nice midge hatch took place in the calmer waters by the island and had fish rising the entire time. The zebra midge was very productive but I couldn't find a productive surface fly even though there was alot of action on the surface. I tried nearly all my midge and small fly patterns but only the foam midge emerger with brown body, wulff hackle, and orange foam received any interest, and even that fly was ignored/refused more often than not. I need to work on some better midge emerger patterns.

There was a ridiculous number of people at OsLa #1 and half a dozen people fishing with bait from the banks on OsLa #3 at any given time. I saw a total of 2 fish caught by the bait fishers. I overheard some kid say to his mom "Why would anybody fish from a boat?" referring to me in my float tube. So to answer the kid I put a zebra midge dropper back on my line and landed 2 fish within 10 minutes. Recognize. :^)

Jason

That is damn solid. And nice work catching the fish in front of the bait fishermen and boat naysayers. :) That always feels good.

I'm surprised you only had light wind. The winds on the SF were like Hurrican Hansen.

You might try a gray thread body, lt brown CDC loop-tuft emerger. Not sure how those will work on stillwaters.

kasta

I won't tolerate smack talk from 5 year olds! :^)

The wind was pretty bad at times, but not so much on the sheltered side of the island where the midge hatch took place.

Yeah, I lost the loop-tuft emerger you gave me on the SoFoBo and didn't get any tied before going out yesterday. It just occurred to me that I also did not try the other midge pattern you provided in the flybox. I'll just have to go back out again and try them. I can tell you that the SMA was flat out rejected - I think I saw one trout snicker as he swam past it.

Jason

Oh yes, the parachute midge emerger. That should have at least garnered a few looks from the trout. It's a pretty good midge emerger pattern.
