Notes
Karl, Bryce and I had spent the early afternoon walking to 3 smaller lakes in the Soldier Lakes group. Two of the three lakes only had small trout while at the third Karl had spotted a larger trout cruising. We both fished the third lake and Karl landed one or two decent fish. We then hiked up to Captain Lake.
It was somewhat wind when we arrived at Captain Lake. We walked around over half of the lake without spotting any fish cruising (although it was hard because of the wind). We climbed the rock face on the southern shore and immediately noticed a pod of 6-8 large 15”-18” cutthroats cruising out to the middle. We had finally found a lake with nice fish. After resting for a bit and not seeing any more fish, we climbed down and I put on my waders and started fishing my way back north along the western shore. Using a sinking line and a #10 BH FB PT with a slow-medium retrieve, I hooked into a nice 16” cutthroat near the inlet. I moved further north and had a couple takes before hooking and landing a 17” cutthroat. I had an absolutely jarring hit a couple casts later and the fish snapped off my fly. I then caught another 10” as Bryce and Karl were heading back to camp.
