Notes

Opening weekend was expected to be a zoo and lived up to the expectation. However, 99.9% of this traffic was concentrated in boat anglers and to a wader this usually has no adverse effect. Today was no different, as boat after boat made their way down the canyon section with a few of them hooked up but most of them watching Jared and I net fish.

Fishing the canyon was great as usual in the spring with high water. Fish were not feeding actively on naturals as Jared and I probably only saw 2 rises the entire day. That didnt mean they werent looking up. Fish were holding almost everywhere you would expect a fish to hold and if you got a decent presentation they would take it. We did see a few flies coming off that looked like brown drakes (not an emtemologist) but nothing that had the fish in a frenzy. I started with my time tested Royal Wullff Parachute that never dissapoints and got in to a fish at the first hole below the island. Jared prospected with a huge Cicada that didnt produce until we hit the snags where he landed a strong 20 inch rainbow and possibly his biggest fish he has landed on the South Fork. I was just about ready to snap off a picture of this bohemoth when the fishing gods with there sense of humor decided to intervene and the fish flopped right out of his hands, bounced off the net, and into the water for a less than graceful release. Canyon section did very well along the whole stretch with the snags and the double tree holes being the most productive (as usual).

Finished the canyon stretch, had a beer on Danskin and made our way to the Cave. Fishing was almost as tough as the wading and only hooked up with a couple that either spit the hook or broke off (5X ensures more hook ups but also ensures more break offs). All in all was a great day with lots of action and a few toads brought to net.
