Notes

MCB, TMM, & BD:

Since we had a fairly nice rain yesterday and it was warm this morning I thought I would get out and do a little fishing. Well, I did a lot of fishing and just a little catching. When I went to bed last night Spring creek was rising due to the rain, but this morning before I left I checked it again and it had come back down and was again very low. I decided to fish Spring even though it was low and I went to Benner Springs. I walked back to the prison land no trespassing sign and fished from there back to the parking lot at the hatchery. I think I had the worse morning that I have ever had on Spring Creek. Last Friday I had one of the best morning that I have had on Spruce Creek, but today it was a completly different story.

I fished for about 2.5 hours and managed to catch only 4 brown trout. They were 10-12 inch trout, but only four in 2.5 hours is not very exciting. I like to fish Spring Creek when the water level is about 4.0 ft. and the flow is 100-120 cfs on the Houserville gauge. This morning it was 3.12 ft. and the flow was only 17 cfs. I looked back over some of my old records and I can't find a flow lower than that for Spring. With every cast I had to clean green crap off my spinner, but of course that's sort of normal for Spring. I didn't even have many hits this morning. I could see trout following my spinner, of course I could the water was shallow and crystal clear, but they wouldn't hit the spinner. I tried my entire bag of spinner tricks, slowing down, speeding up, changing directions, even stopping and starting the spinner, but nothing made a difference.

There was one vehicle there when I got to the parking area this morning and it was a fly-guy who was fishing fairly close to the parking area, so I didn't think he would be a problem. I was wrong, he was the worse kind of fly-guy for me to run into. He was fishing downstream and jumping from good spot to good spot and not fishing any spot for very long. We passed each other about half way through my morning's fishing and I didn't catch a trout after that. I'm sure my crappy morning had a lot more to due with the water and weather conditions than it did the fly-guy's competition, but I'm looking for good excuses.

This was the kind of morning that makes me ready to take a few months off from fishing.
