Notes

MCB, TMM, & BD:

I fished the quarry section of the LJ this morning. I started at the bridge to the quarry and finished about three hours later at the big pool below the second RR bridge above the quarry. There was no one on the stream in that section when I started, but when I got back to the truck there were three vehicles there and there must have been 7 or 8 fly-guys thrashing the water both above and below the quarry bridge. I really didn't think it would be that many guys on the stream on a Tuesday morning in August. I think the pressure in that section also explains my results this morning.

When I started I fished for an hour and only caught two nine inch trout in that first hour. I was fishing the section directly above the quarry bridge and judging from what I saw when I came back to my truck this morning, that section really gets hammered. When I got closer to the middle of the section I started to pick up a few more fish. I only caught a dozen brown trout, the biggest trout was 12 inches, and I also caught one smallmouth bass. The bass was the biggest fish of the morning at 13 inches. I caught it in one of pools near the first RR bridge. I worked fairly hard this morning to catch 13 fish. I'm not sure how many casts I made, but a heck of a lot of them didn't get any hits or follows. This was not a very active morning for the fish on the LJ.

This was also the lowest I have seen the LJ so far this year. It was also crystal clear. Low, slow, and crystal clear, not the best conditions for spin fishing. The water temperature was 60 degrees, which isn't bad for this time in August. That's probably because we have been having some fairly cool weather for August weather.

I have things to do for most of the rest of this week and next week the grandsons will be here, so I don't think I'll get on the streams very much in August.
