Notes

USGS 13215000 MALHEUR RIVER BEL WARMSPRINGS RES NR RIVERSIDE OR
Nice place, similar to the Owyhee but much more open.
The directions in Flyfishing Oregon are off once you turn on to dirt road. The (L) turn to access the river is 2 miles at the THIRD cowcatcher - not 2nd.
The weather was nice but the water was VERY low. Access is easy but you do need 4WD to get down to the river. I fished some dumps and tried a few holes with little luck. The water was only inches deep in most the river so the fish were locked into the holes. Didn't need waders at all.
Saw some risers hitting subsurface but since the book recommended nymphs, streamers, I only had a few small (#18) dries and therefore, no hits. What I needed was some small black midges (like Owyhee fishing). I did hook into a fiesty bow in the same place on a Prince and was a nice fight to get him in.
After that, just walked from hole to hole trying to hook-up but with no luck. The river needed more water.
Did see tons of large whitefish in the holes - literally 2-3 dozen in a moderately-sized/depth hole.
Not really worth the drive until more water in river and talked with some locals/flyshop to focus in on best levels, flies, tactics, and time of year.
